With the objective of providing scientific evidence for decision-makers in the rescue operation, CAS sent two airplanes on 14 May to quake-hit southwest China to carry out the tasks of remote sensing monitoring and evaluation.

With the all-weather and day/night capacity of information acquisition, the remote-sensing system onboard the planes could offer high-resolution optical and radar images of the targets. The planes have completed many important remote-sensing tasks over past years. Especially in 2003 when the flood disaster occurred in Huaihe River, they provided decision-makers with comprehensive and accurate information about the disaster.
