ISPRS Council Members Visit CEODE

On 14 February, the Council members of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) visited the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE), CAS.

The Council members visited the Operation Hall of the Remote Sensing Satellite Receiving Network and watched videos on the Digital Earth Science Platform. They also visited the three international organizations hosted by CEODE: the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the Auspices of UNESCO (HIST), the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), and the International Programme Office for Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR IPO).

After touring CEODE, both sides met to discuss upcoming events and opportunities for cooperation. Firstly, CEODE Director-General GUO Huadong warmly welcomed ISPRS and CEODE Deputy Director ZHANG Bing gave a brief introduction to CEODE, the operation of major national scientific and technological infrastructures, researchprogress andresults, as wellaspreparationsfor the 35th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment in 2013, hosted by CEODE. Afterwards, WANG Changlin, Executive Director of ISDE and Executive Editor of the International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE), and HIST Deputy Director HONG Tianhua respectively gave reports on the two international organizations’ missions, development, achievements and future goals, and they also expressed hopes to cooperate with ISPRS.

The ISPRS delegation expressed their thanks for being invited and affirmed that China has invested greatly in scientific research on remote sensing and other related research fields. After listening to the reports by ISDE, IJDE and HIST, they expressed that they would exchange more information on their scientific research with CEODE and the international organizations. They stated that both sides had the potential for future cooperation in developing their organizations, membership, and applications of space technology to heritage monitoring and protection and other related fields. Meanwhile, they also introduced The XXII Congress of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing in Melbourne, Australia, and invited CEODE researchers to participate. After the meeting, Director-General GUO presented to the guests a book CEODE compiled: Atlas of Remote Sensing for World Heritage: China.

During the ISPRS visit, Dr. Jane Rovins, the Executive Director of the IRDR IPO, introduced the IRDR Programme and the research activities of its working groups. ISPRS President Orhan Altan introduced their research work related to disaster risk, including information on their upcoming events and publications. Both parties agreed that information sharing and event coordination would be a highly effective way to cooperate in the future.

Also in attendance were representatives of the National Geomatics Center of China.
