On 16 May, Former Delegate of China to UNESCO SHI Shuyun paid a visit to the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the Auspices of UNESCO (HIST) hosted by CEODE.

The guests watched a demonstration video titled “The Digital Earth Science Platform” and visited the other international organizations hosted by CEODE. Deputy Directors of HIST WANG Xinyuan and HONG Tianhua, the staff of the Digital Heritage Laboratory, and the HIST Secretariat attended the meeting.

SHI spoke highly of CEODE’s progress in creating mechanisms for institution-building, research, talent training, and developing scientific and research infrastructures and technical strength. Taking from her experiences at the Sessions of the World Heritage Committee as Delegate of China to UNESCO,SHI gave an introduction to the re-delineation of the Three Parallel Rivers Natural World Heritage Site and the applications for Danxia and the West Lake to become world heritage sites. Her report was especially insightful to CEODE and HIST representatives regarding the World Heritage Committee’s work in world heritage site applications, assessment, and management.

CEODE leaders GUO Huadong, WANG Xiaoming, ZHANG Bing and YIN Ming met with SHI and thanked her for the support of HIST’s applying home and in UNESCO, hoping she would continue to support the work of HIST.

The aim of SHI’s invitation to CEODE was to strengthen communication outside of CEODE and familiarize HIST’s staff with the problems and technical needs common to world heritage applications, assessment, protection and management. It was also hoped that the staff of HIST would develop an understanding of the work involved in managing world heritage and further improve its strategies to promote HIST’s development.
