On 3 February, Prof. FANG Xin, Member of the CAS Presidium, inspected the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE), CAS.
Prof. FANG Xin and other guests visited the CAS key lab of Digital Earth and the satellite ground control hall to see the remote sensing operation and control system and watched videos on the Digital Earth Science Platform. They also visited the three international organizations hosted by CEODE: the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the Auspices of UNESCO, the International Society for Digital Earth and the International Programme Office for Integrated Research on Disaster Risk. After listening to a report on CEODE’s research, operations and “Innovation 2020” initiative by CEODE Director-General GUO Huadong, Prof. FANG Xin gave an address.
Prof. FANG Xin noted CEODE’s considerable progress since its establishment and praised CEODE’s strategic positioning, academic achievements, station construction, international influence, and the important role CEODE played in the earthquake relief work in Wenchuan and Yushu. She pointed out that these achievements were attributed to the talented teams led by CEODE’s leaders. She extended thanks to CEODE’s staff for their unremitting efforts and contributions to CEODE.
Prof. FANG Xin put forth her hope for CEODE’s future development combined with strategic objectives. She stated that CEODE should complete high-priority national tasks and dig into scientific issues to implement a beneficial cycle between meeting national needs and pioneering international scientific research. As a unit conducting both operations and scientific research, CEODE should take advantage of the relationships between the two to interactively support, promote and develop them. It is necessary to strengthen talent development and provide high-level training to promote science and technology, support management and other personnel, and foster the comprehensive development of young talent. These common areas can be further condensed to form the institute’s distinctive culture and lay a foundation for the comprehensive development of CEODE.
After the end of the report, Prof. FANG Xin, CAS official GUO Jianjun, and CEODE’s leaders held a special meeting to conduct exchanges regarding the inspection.
